Cheap Travel Tickets May Be a Trick

Many of us who travel, work hard at finding the cheapest tickets possible. Airfare websites are climbing over themselves trying to capture our travel dollars. Although doing the research to find cheap tickets can be exhausting and confounding, we at least feel as if we are in control. Or so we thought.

Typically, we uncover several airfare deals and make informed decisions before we reach for our credit cards. New information reveals we may not have as much control over our navigations as we thought we had. If companies offering online airfare use computer cookies to monitor your online research, it might explain why finding that low fare seems to be a moving target for you. You identify cheap airfare and perhaps only a few minutes later it’s no longer available.

It doesn’t matter if you are looking to book a cheap flight to Lanzarote or a cheap flight to Kenya, those cookies will disclose your online activity.

Here’s an explanation. When you find an acceptable fare for your holiday to Lanzarote, you may experience a bait-and-switch technique. When airfare prices fluctuate so much during your search, seemingly right before your eyes, your suspicions should be aroused. The accusation is that airfare websites have a secret process for offering you attractive prices that you cannot purchase. They tempt you with low fares and conveniently make them unavailable to you. So far, the proof that airlines are using cookies to bait-and-switch their fares is anecdotal but compelling all the same.

If you suspect that airfare websites are indeed tricking you into buying higher priced travel fares, you can experiment with two tricks of your own.

1. Turn your computer off when you have identified that a low fare becomes inaccessible and is replaced with a higher priced offer. If you have access to another computer, log in, search again for that low fare, and see if you can snare it.

2. A second trick you can use is to clear out your cookies on your web browser. We have heard reports from a few folks who say they had better airfare shopping after they cleared their cookies.

Happy traveling. Keep searching for those cheap fares!
