History

After the invention of Sketchpad System, CAD was slowly being developed. It was first used commercially by big firms such as automotive companies and aerospace industries, and also in electronics. With the rise of more affordable computers, application areas gradually spread out as well. Initially, CAD was used to make two-dimensional designs in the 1970′s. It then evolved greatly in the 1980′s with progresses in computer hardware and programming.

One CAD operator could now replace three to five drafters that used conventional methods. The need for drafting departments decreased even more when engineers started drafting their own works. In addition to that, expenses for training traditional drafters were eliminated because they were no longer needed.
