I have not had a guest yet who did not enjoy shooting my air gun rifle in my backyard shooting range. Although there are millions of members of the national rifle association a surprisingly large number of people that I know have never fired either a real rifle or pistol, or even an airgun.
That’s too bad because backyard shooting is a lot of fun. First and foremost I set up my backyard range so that safety is my paramount concern. An airgun is not a real rifle but it can still be a dangerous weapon if not handled properly and safely. Everybody who participates, and that includes the spectators, is required to wear protective eye wear. I picked up several pairs of shooting glasses at Wal-Mart for less than five dollars each so I got that covered very quickly.
I built a 4×4 backstop out of half-inch plywood sandwiched with metal baking trays. There is no way that any of the airgun rifles that are fired at my backyard range are going to penetrate that backstop and cause anybody any damage. I used a mixture of redwood mulch and pliable air conditioning duct sealer to mold a three-inch sound stopper. When a pellet enters the backstop it goes directly into the sound stopper so that I am not going to alert any neighbors with the thwack of a pellet hitting the wood. It also prevents ricochets which are often a problem shooting steel BBs. Ricochets happen less often with lead pallets but preventing them is still a major safety concern.
