Small Business Grants for Tax Counseling

The U.S. government offers numerous grants and cooperative agreements via a number of its offices. One particular grant gives funding for nonprofit agencies to offer counseling to seniors to assist with completing their annual taxation statements.

The IRS has allotted $5.1 Million for the 2011 Budgetary Year to aid the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (T.C.E.) Program

The IRS, which operates inside the Treasury Department is authorized to initiate accords with private or non-governmental public nonprofit 501c(3)’s which give training and practical guidance to volunteers who deliver cost-free tax guidance and assistance to seniors who’re age sixty or older for the submission of their tax returns.

Grants may be used to pay volunteers for incidental expenses such as transportation, meals as well as other expenditures incurred by them in providing tax counseling help at locations convenient for the senior citizens.

Through a competitive approach, suitable candidate groups and agencies compete for acceptance to become a Tax Counseling for the Elderly sponsor. These groups have to be a not for profit group experienced in managing volunteer services, along with understanding of the tax submission process.

Competent organizations can obtain grants to provide regional Counseling Programs. Tax return completion assistance is furnished to seniors throughout the customary Federal Income tax filing timeframe, which can be from the 1st of January to the 15th of April annually. On top of that the advising activities required to ensure that senior taxpayers get reliable tax assistance of the best quality can be performed throughout the year.

The Cooperative Agreement between the Internal Revenue Service and the not for profit organization defines the tasks that the program sponsor and Internal Revenue Service will perform, the geographical area involved, the maximum amount of financing offered for reimbursement and administrative functions as well as other data.

Beginning with the 2011 T.C.E. Program, multi-year funding opportunities are available for not for profit organizations that are qualified and match the needed standards.

Organizations presenting an application may elect, if they are thinking about being considered for a multi-year Tax Counseling for the Elderly grant. Consideration is limited to those applicants that meet all eligibility conditions.

Acceptance from the Internal Revenue Service of an organization for the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program for one year does not automatically imply that the group is going to be okayed into the T.C.E. program in ensuing years.

A nonprofit group which is approved to supply Tax Counseling for the Elderly services is responsible for every aspect of operating a T.C.E. Program including, but not limited to marketing the program, volunteer recruitment and training, Web page design and construction and outreach to seniors inside their region.
