The History and Theory Behind Duck Decoys

Duck decoys have a long and interesting history uncovered by archaeologists in 1924. They found 11 handmade duck decoys made of tule reeds, bulrush and duck feathers. Even today these are the oldest known duck decoys, dating back to 200 A.D. Joel Barber was named “the father of the decoy” which is attributed to his collections, carvings and exhibitions.

The purpose of duck decoys are to draw in live ducks for hunters to shoot and bag. With the proper placement of decoys and the right number of decoys you will attract other live ducks to join the group. One theory is that if you have done your job well, other ducks will land thinking it’s a secure, safe area.

You can also equate this illustration to driving by a restaurant that’s packed with cars and another that only sports one or two. Surely the sight of a packed place must mean that the food is better, right? As for the hunter, the hunting becomes increasingly better when you have more ducks landing near your duck decoys.

Although these theories of duck decoys may hold some truth, there are probably just as many far-out theories in duck hunting as fishermen have fish stories. Hunters of every description and nationality have some formula for attracting ducks. One popular notion is the more duck decoys you use, the more live ducks you will ultimately bring in.

There are those hunters that still believe that nothing will do but wooden decoys with effective realistic paint jobs. Some hunters who use the more duck decoys is better theory, are heavily convinced that light weight plastic decoys are the way to go.

Plastic decoys do offer the benefit of being lightweight and easy to transport to difficult locations. The ultimated key in the use of duck decoys isn’t really the material that comprises them, but rather the dementions and how realistic the decoys are. The more effective the decoys, the more successful the hunt.
