Weddings: Do They Have to Be Expensive?

You are engaged and you’ve set your wedding date, it’s all exciting and wonderful but you keep thinking about your bank account and it becomes a bit scary. Read on for some great suggestions on planning the wedding you’ve always dreamed of at a reasonable price.

Friends may suggest borrowing the money you need from the bank – but think of what you could do as a couple with all that extra money if you plan carefully. It could be savings for future children, starting a new company, or some fantastic travel opportunities.

Weddings don’t magically come together in a short period of time, it takes thought and time to plan well and stay on track with your budget. Get a binder and paper, then divide it into sections to keep track of your ideas and expenses.

Have a plan for every financial branch of your wedding. Search the web for wedding photos and wedding videos, read bridal magazines, and go to wedding shows for ideas. This is all part of the game when planning an event like a wedding. Review your notes and ideas on a regular basis and think of ways to stay on budget. I have a few ideas to get you started.

A couple looking to keep the cost of their wedding down should work hard at finding a great dress at a reasonable price. Find the style and type of dress your heart desires and then start networking and researching. Ask friends where they found great deals on dresses, or for websites that can help. One trend that keeps your dress cost to a minimum is renting. Check online or in the yellow pages to see if your community has stores that rent wedding dress, after all this could be a dress you only wear once.

Video and photography is another section pulling at your bank account. You can make some great choices to save money but be very careful. Pictures are, except your own memories, all that you may have left from that special day (and of course your spouse!). Having a friend responsible for pictures and videos may save a ton of money but can backfire. Regardless of which photographer you pick check their job experience, review their sample photos and make sure they know which type of pictures you hope to catch at your wedding.

Some movies and celebrity weddings have put the idea of a hiring a wedding planner into the spotlight. On a budget, this isn’t a great idea. You could accomplish the same thing as a wedding planner for a much smaller cost. Lots of software programs and do it yourself books can help keep you and your wedding on track. Involve your bridesmaids by asking them to manage certain parts of the wedding. Make sure they have a clear idea of what needs to be done.

Weddings are stressful, sometimes dealing with family and friends for parts of the event can enhance that stress because the relationship is so close. If you decide to keep it in the family for things like reception music/entertainment, catering or choosing flowers make sure they have guidance from you and that you have faith in their decisions. Saving money is great but nobody wants to feel bad if a wrong decision was made on something important. Make sure the people helping to create the memories of your wedding feel confident in their role.

Time to review what we’ve learned: Make use of all the resources you can get your hands on to save you time and money. Be really specific when explaining what you need from people helping you with your wedding. If you do that your wedding will be a hit and you’ll be able to enjoy it without worrying about the money.
